The night before Fred we stayed in Montclair VA. We have to thank Janine for the backyard and hot tub. That made all the difference after a near 100 mile day.

Been out for 7 days and this is the first time we’ve had a chance to sit down in front of a computer. Here’s a brief run down. Kinda tired and need to hit the road early tomorrow so itll be short. We went about ~490 in 5 days and landed in DC on Monday.  We ended up taking two days off to see the city, some family and friends.

Day one was a fast 70 miles South to NYC. Turns out you cant ride a bike through the Bronx Zoo. Google walking directions are still in beta and not really meant for biking I guess, but they did the trick.

Hopefully we wont be portaging these loaded bikes again too many times…

Thanks Sophia for the hospitality the first night and on the 4th.  Sorry your view is being built over but that wont matter for long. Good luck in China!

We crossed NJ into PA at Lambertville which will definitely be worth a weekend trip at some point after this ride. The weather has been on our side so far with the exception of 4 hours of serious downfall around Doylestown PA. The bags were 100% waterproof and so was our raingear. We road into the night for about three hours after sunset trying to get to Norristown PA but settled for a field behind a AAA and made Norristown the next morning.

Deep in NJ we ran across a FLW lookalike and tons of burbs.

FLW?

So far everyone we’ve met has been really nice. Out in PA we met a guy who let us set up camp out in some property he owned. It was the first night we managed to pass out before 9 and get in a full breakfast.

The hospitality of friends, family and complete strangers is really incredible. Thanks Cindy for the two nights downtown and Mike for our last night in DC.

Mike, thanks for the modification on those stupid shorts.

Oh, and Paul over at City Cycles in DC we owe you one too.

Too tired to do everyone justice here… will update next time.

Radar Drop

We put this site together to give you a look at our journey before we drop off the radar. We’re planning three legs: Fairfield Beach CT to Imperial Beach CA, Imperial Beach to Seattle WA and Seattle back through the Northern states. The plan is to bike the first two legs, work for a week or two and rent a car to drive back. (Mainly so we can say high to Amelia and friends in Chicago) Before we leave, we’ll put as much info about our route, bikes, gear and ambitions up here as possible. After we get back, hopefully this will turn into a good place for some bicycle touring advice/inspiration. Oh, speaking of inspiration… good luck Pete with the NYC to Canada pedal!

The other reason for this site is that we were wondering if you all could help us with some good ol’ crowd sourcing. We put together a map (see the MAP!!! page) and could use some advice on things to see, places to be and sounds to listen to.

The first leg is the most, well, its about 3,900 miles with ~600 of those being off-road through some mountains near Pueblo Colorado down to around Silver City New Mexico. What you’ll see is mapped out at a “City to City” resolution. Don’t worry though, the ever amazing cartographers over at AdventureCycling.org have provided us with street by street, bike shop by post office, large tree by funny looking rock directions. Please email us or post comments with any destinations you might know about and we’ll see how far we can stray before we get lost…

Thanks,

Vincent & John
